Seodaemun Prison History Hall

Korea is one of the very few countries that maintain a museum dedicated to prison history. One may ask why keep such a horrific place? Perhaps the reason focuses more on the history than the prison, as many of those imprisoned here in the past were fighting for Korean independence during turbulent times.

Gyeokbyeokjang (Exercise Yard)

This was the outdoor exercise area for the prisoners. Each entrance of this panopticon structure was only wide enough to fit one adult, preventing any possible outbreaks. It was also designed to be monitored from the watchtower far and above.

This somber and eerie place is not for the faint of heart, as it contains gruesome details of torture and execution chambers. For such reasons, certain areas of the history hall are unfit for public photographs. If you plan to visit, it is advised that you proceed with caution and respect.
