Tenjin Matsuri
Tenjin Matsuri in Osaka is considered one of the top three summer festivals in Japan, along with the Gion Matsuri in Kyoto and the Kanda Matsuri in Tokyo. It is held annually on July 24 and 25. The festivities begin at the Tenmangu Shrine, where performers of all ages prepare ritual music and dance before the parade, which features mikoshi (portable shrines that function as parade floats).
With the help of a cheering squad, the parade gets underway.
It takes a handful of strong men and women to handle the mikoshi.
Like this gentleman, who is a boxer.
The parade continues south and eventually reaches the Okawa River, where you'll encounter another parade, this time with actual boats floating on the water.
For many locals, Tenjin Matsuri is a perfect opportunity to adorn their favorite yukata with vibrant accessories.
Or, just choose something more comfortable for walking around.
On this sweltering day with temperatures exceeding 40°C, however, the puff jacket with a built-in cooling fan ended up being the most admired outfit among many.
How cool is that?
